Lady Bird Johnson Grove

During Richard Nixon’s historic visit to Redwood State Park in August 1969, Shuster was among the photographers who captured the dedication of a grove of ancient redwoods to former First Lady Ladybird Johnson. The ceremony was a tribute to both her work in environmental activism and her efforts to "beautify America." In the midst of the Vietnam War, Shuster also saw value in reporting on the protestors from the Humboldt Peace Center who rallyed against the President's arrival in the county. Two news stories on the Times Standard front page read "Historic Day in Redwoods" and "Caution: No Utopia after peace in Vietnam."
