The lumber industry was still very strong during this time. Lumber is very versatile and thus creates uses for many types of consumers and their interests. Redwood are a softer wood and are essential for buildings, furniture, and paper.

Logging is kinda of like a sport in a way. All these members gather together to try and take down a mighty redwood. If one person slacks, then efficiency problems occur and lives might be at risk. Teamwork and trust are the unifying factors between the two and are very important for success.
